Book Review: Being Autistic (And what that Actually Means) by Niamh Garvey.

This is an illustrated book for kids who may be wondering what their autism diagnosis means. Both the author and illustrator are neurodivergent, which is a bonus! It reviews the traits of autism and how they may present, being careful to explain that all autistic people are different. It gives information about how neurotypicals may (mis)interpret autistic people, but does well remaining affirming. For example, they explain how NT people may respond to lack of eye contact, but then follow up the information with the statement, "But don't worry!! Autistic people do NOT have to force the selves to make eye contact," along with information on how to compensate for this difference. The author also includes frequent co-occurring experiences and diagnoses including information about things like ADHD and hypermobility. This book can easily be screened by parents before handing over to kids or before reading it together. I will definitely be recommending this book to autistic kids and their families in the future!
