Book Review: Autism in Heels: The Untold Story of a Female Life on the Spectrum by Jennifer Cook

Book Review: Autism in Heels: The Untold Story of a Female Life on the Spectrum, Book by Jennifer Cook (Not to be confused with Jennifer Cork). This was the first memoire that I read written by a late diagnosed autistic woman. It was recommended to me shortly after I received my own autism diagnosis by another autistic social worker. Ms. Cook is funny, smart, and engaging. She is also very open and vulnerable, discussing struggles she had as a child, her experiences in an abusive relationship in college, struggles with disordered eating, and other challenges autistic women all too often face . As she recounts these experiences, she gives information on what the research says about autism in women in order to give context and to help others understand their own experiences. I appreciated that at the beginning of some of the more difficult chapters, she gives a warning so that people can avoid reading those sections if they need to. This is a book that I often recommend that autistic women read to help them better understand themselves and to help start conversations about their own autistic experiences.
